Lian Gravelle’s ESOP Plus® practice is focused on implementing ESOP transactions and maintaining compliance with the regulations of the IRS and the Department of Labor. Lian has extensive experience with many facets of ESOPs including: initial plan design and amendments, IRS corrections, DOL audits, compliance, and fiduciary duties.
Lian was previously an ESOP Relationship Manager for Horizon Trust and Investment Management where she served as a member of the ESOP Committee. In that capacity, Lian worked directly with clients for whom Horizon was a discretionary trustee for about 10 transactions per year. She also worked with 32 ESOP clients for whom Horizon was the ongoing directed trustee. Most recently, Lian was a Client Consulting Administrator for OneAmerica, a major employee benefits consulting firm.
Lian’s experience with an institutional ESOP trustee ensures that clients are represented with the highest level of integrity throughout the life of the ESOP. Her experience involves initial ESOP transactions, second stage transactions, phantom stock and synthetic equity plans, due diligence reviews initially and annually, and annual valuations of company stock. She has helped clients work with the DOL and IRS to correct problem transactions and valuations.
As a consulting administrator, Lian has coached clients through every aspect of their ESOP from feasibility studies to correcting compliance testing failures. She has worked with clients to design new plan documents and can consult on required or elective plan amendments and restatements. Lian also has worked with clients who have multiple retirement plans for their employees to align plan provisions.
Lian is a graduate of Syracuse University (cum laude) and Valparaiso University Law School. She is admitted to the bar of Indiana and New York.
